It's Time to Plant Annuals! Selecting Hardy Plants

Spring is here and it's time to revisit the garden! Flowering annuals are a favorite among homeowners. They last through the summer until the first frost and need to be replaced each year. These versatile plants can be planted in flower beds, baskets or containers.
Some sun-loving annuals (requiring at least six hours of sunlight per day) that grow well in the Southeastern Pennsylvania region, are pest resistant and will grow in most soil conditions include:

  • Wave Petunia, a spreading plant that is heat tolerant and long-flowering
  • Marigolds which are easy to grow and bloom all summer
  • Snap Dragons, which bloom in early summer, wilt mid-summer and re-bloom in the fall
  • Geraniums, a hardy plant with large flowers and minimal pest and disease problems

  • Hardy plants requiring partial shade or shady locations include:
  • Forget-Me-Nots, a shade-lover with small delicate flowers
  • Verbena, which grows in semi-shade, tolerates drought and comes in a variety of colors
  • Impatiens are the best annual color producer for shady sites, but are not as pest resistant as some of the other plants listed above
Annuals are just a start. For other landscape needs, Gardner/Fox offers comprehensive landscape services ranging from garden maintenance to the design and installation of patios, walks, pergolas, water features and landscape lighting. • Center City Philadelphia Homes are HOT!

People are rediscovering city living, which provides the opportunity to be close to cultural centers, nightlife, and workplaces. According to the Philadelphia Business Journal, residential development in Philadelphia hit a record high in 2004, apparently driven by young people without children and empty nesters. Condominiums have been a popular choice because of their low maintenance appeal, however owners often personalize their space by renovating. Historic homes, which Philadelphia has plenty of, are popular but renovations and additions to historic homes must be carefully planned due to zoning requirements.

Featured are two recent examples of city projects completed by Gardner/Fox.

A 300 square-foot dining room addition enlarged the living space of this historically registered 18th century home located in Society Hill. Because there was no access area for machinery, all excavation and foundation work was done by hand. Custom millwork and refinished wide-plank flooring seemlessly blend with the original home.

    Spring Home Maintenance Tips
Air Conditioner Weather Will be Here Before You Know It!
Clean debris away from your central air conditioning unit and vacuum the top of the unit. Check window units and remove and wash filters in soapy water.

    Prepare for Outdoor Living
Uncover and clean all outdoor furniture and grills. Power wash dirt and mildew from decks, replace broken boards and rails and apply all-weather sealer or stain.

    Outdoor Maintenance
We've experienced a great deal of rain in recent months. Some suggestions for preventing water from entering your house include cleaning debris from gutters and downspouts, extending downspouts further away from your home and re-grading soil to slope away from your home.

Rake debris away from the side of the house and trim any trees or shrubs that touch the house.

Open hose bibs, connect garden hoses and inspect them for cracks or leaks. Inspect and touch-up exterior paint and scrub mildewed areas on your home's exterior.

    Check Alarms
Change smoke alarm and CO2 monitor batteries. Clean dust from the interior and exterior of the units.

    Plan Home Improvement Projects
Plan and budget major home improvement projects such as painting the exterior of the house, deck or patio construction, driveway resurfacing or replacement and landscaping.
